Found at a car boot sale, I think he's very Froudian : ) His head is hand carved out of one piece of wood, he also has carved hands and feet, he was once a marionette but was so tangled I had to set him free.
I fell in love......

Awful Pic...clothing upcycle

I have 3 abayah/caftan things I bought from ebay ages ago to do something with, they are some kind of polyester material and apart from Halloween outings they didnt see the light of day so in a burst of creativity today I turned the navy one into something more wearable - a tunicish thing.

The pic is horrible cos my batteries are going but the abayah was plain navy, I cut it off below the bust and added a blue/cream panel then added another piece of the original to the bottom. It has a drawstring neckline which I was going to turn into a scoop but then hit on the idea to add cone shapes to the drawstrings giving it a 'parka' look.

My friend was looking for tiles yesterday and we went to Home Elite Interiors and I found some great fabric for 99p a metre so £1.98 =
Its just 4 rectangles 2 for the basque and 2 for the main skirt and a waistband...easy
Thank you Jan for modelling it - now go and do tiling : )

Huge Baggy Tunic + Tutorial
Friday, 24 July 2009
I wanted to make a huge tunic thing for layering, I couldn't find a pattern for what I wanted so I decided to 'bodge' one up, this is how it turned out:

The material is a stretch jersey remnant I got from ebay and its a very 'in your face' pink. It might be nicer done is something more drapey too. Anyhow, here's the tutorial of sorts;
After you've measured and cut it out, sew up the shoulder seams. Measure around the armholes and cut a 5cm wide piece of material to fit all the way around plus a little extra which will be cut off afterwards (better too much than not enough eh?), take it to the ironing board and turn it into binding, theres a great tutorial at Whipstitch.
Sew in place around both arms and repeat around the neckline.
Stich up both sideseams and hem around the bottom. Press everything!!

Bags....
I haven't been entirely uncreative even though the quilt still isn't finished I'm ashamed to say.
I visited the Fat Quarter shop yesterday and saw some great mushroom print which was ideal for my friend who is spending this season as a mushroom : ) and ran it up into a bag as soon as I got home.

Yes that is a toaster in the background but it was the only room in the house that was bright enough to take the picture without a flash. The bag lining is a contrasting batik.
I also finally finished this bag:

which came free with the book Make by Cath Kidston , I have to say applique isn't my forte but it was quite good fun . My son insisted on wearing it for the photo.

All in one day......

I have gone from being the proud owner of a Brother XL5500SE to owning 3 others:-

An E&R Classic n521 made by Aisin which I believe is Toyota which I swapped for a pristine Singer 99 hand operated machine that I got for her from a car boot sale. She has never used this machine because she is a complete technophobe : D
I have to say I don't really rate Toyota having had one a long time ago and having it jam up if you dared ask it to go through more than 2 thicknesses if material but this one seems quite happy to do so and does lots of fancy stitching too.
Then in the evening these two appeared on my doorstep:-

They both came from my friends' boyfriend whose Mother died last year, she was obviously a crafty lady back in the day and made some lovely victorian dolls which I also have plus the book on how to make them.
The top machine is a Singer 760, all singing and dancing by the look of it, does embroidery by using these disks that you drop in the top, it even has a walking foot and all its accessories and the manual. I had a quick try last night and it runs beautifully.
The other is a Jones CS-E Cylinder shuttle which is quite a retro looking 50's basic electric machine, it has the instruction book but I haven't tried it yet.
DS and I will be cleaning them up and trying them out today then we can use the dining table again.
